*With the quote by St Augustine in mind “the world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page”, she visits as many places possible. Roxana lives in Australia and shares experiences from down under and adventures on the road.*

I admit it, I am a bit of an addict when it comes to shows like No reservations with Anthony Bourdain or Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre World. They have irreversibly infected me with the globe-trotting bug and infused me with cravings I never knew I could have. If you have a dynamic job that requires frequent travelling (like fly-attendants or businesspeople), or you’re just a nomad in heart, crafting your budget appropriately is definitely advised. Since I’m a certified foodie and I like to complement it with a good drink, I always think of ways to cut corners and save some money for the emergencies or unnegotiable payments. Naturally, I spared no effort to find the out about the best cheap eating tips and added some of my own for the journey that agrees with my palate and my wallet alike.

#1 All you can eat | Cheap eating tip
Buffets may not be the high-end places when it comes to food, but you would be surprised what some Asian countries have in their offer. The calculations are in your favour as such food can fill your belly for the most of the day, and for a relatively inexpensive price.

#2 On the go | Cheap eating tip
You can get your quick meals such as classic sausages, patties or sandwiches, as well as some unusual like croquets and special filled pastry from an outdoor stand. It’s a fast pick-me-up energy source for lazy days and crazy hunger pangs.

#3 Gyros or Burger? | Cheap eating tip
Don’t go to the Middle East and only eat pizza. They have such variety of authentic grubs, of which falafel and hummus are my favourites. It’s a shame to pay more for less flavour. They give you a nice balance of feast for the stomach and untroubled account.

#4 Street style | Cheap eating tip
Onto the real deal. I consider it high traveller’s offence and rather foolish not to munch on what locals do, especially the ones that have a long and rich culture of street eating. Again, Asia leads the way in numbers and food quality. The often cheap goodie your order is being made right in front of your eyes. You can enjoy it sitting on some makeshift chair or simply standing up, and talking to your newfound friends.

#5 Fast food | Cheap eating tip
The outside US fast food establishments actually offer decent food, special price menu, place for you to sit down and eat at peace, and (usually) decent bathrooms. Dollar items may not be the healthiest but can save a buck sometimes.

#6 Junkie monkey | Cheap eating tip
Try not the waste too much on snacks, sodas and similar products as they provide small amounts of food that do little for our fullness and burdens our budget imprudently. Allow yourself a rare ice cream or tiny dessert, but don’t get carried away.

Gratis – Gratuité –無料 | Cheap eating tip
There’s nothing I like better than free stuff on the road. The new era has made us drink bottled water that’s not even that affordable in some states, and it’s actually more expensive than sodas in America. Refill your bottle anytime you can with approved tap water. There’s even a system in some states that provides direct exchange of cans for coins. When you finally decide it’s time to treat yourself with a fancy dinner, there are tourist cards to provide you with hefty discounts. My newest discovery is the app that can get you free wine, a whole bottle of a quality kind, and served in respectable restaurant.

The trips are all the better if we spice them up with good eats. Make it even by smart juggling of economical choices with elegant and costlier eating places.
